I once read that; “the only way that we can live, is if we grow. The only way that we can grow is if we change. The only way that we can change is if we learn. The only way we can learn is if we are exposed. And the only way that we can become exposed is if we throw ourselves out into the open.” - C. JoyBell C.
Reflecting over my journey so far - the cumulative growth, change, learning, and exposure of my past experiences and travels has made me realise that all of us are born unique.
To quote internationally revered author Robert Greene; “This uniqueness is marked genetically in our DNA. We are a one-time phenomenon in the universe - our exact genetic makeup has never occurred before nor will it ever be repeated. What’s more is that the higher your self belief, the more your power to transform reality. Having supreme confidence makes you fearless and persistent. The most intense form of this is to feel a sense of destiny compelling you forward. This destiny can come from otherworldly sources or from yourself. Think of it like this; You have a set of skills and experiences that make you unique. They point towards some life task that you were meant to accomplish. You see signs of this in the predilections of your youth. Certain tasks that you naturally were drawn to. When you are involved in this task, everything seems to flow more naturally. Believing you are destined to accomplish something doesn’t make you passive or unfree. But the opposite. You are liberated of the normal doubts and confusions that plague us. You have a sense of purpose that guides you but does not chain you to one way of doing things. And when your will power is so deeply engaged it will push you past any dangers or limits.”
In lieu of Robert’s words, I can attest that my perpetual drive and learned skills over the years have since allowed me to become a professional bilingual writer, co-founder, Director of Partnerships for Anti Hero Capital, an Amazon influencer, and a storyteller with experience helping build Chinese branding and engagement for internationally revered entrepreneurs like Gary Vaynerchuk.
To date I’ve been privileged to represent Australia in the 15th annual Chinese bridge speaking competition and am a recipient of the 2016 Confucius Institute Scholarship, the 2014 Taiwan Huayu Enrichment Scholarship, and the 2012 Ian Potter Cultural Trust Grant. My writing has featured in such publications as Drift Magazine and PassionPassport.
I have also collaborated with China Southern Airlines for the 2017 #ExploreGuangzhou Campaign, % Arabica coffee, and am humbled to have received over 400,000 views on my Quora profile with topics ranging on cryptocurrencies, investment, and psychology.
As a final note, there are many paradoxes in life. But one of the most important that helped me navigate and accelerate my growth is that it’s the questions we ask, not the answers, that pave the way for progress. To quote my favourite “Quoran” Dushka Zapata, this perspective is reflected through the Zen Buddhist notion of "shoshin", "beginner's mind". Shoshin suggests that rather than approaching life as "I know" or "I am an expert", I approach life as a true beginner: in awe, with wonder, receptive, empty of preconceptions. It’s not about getting somewhere. It's about experiencing compassion and being truly open, the optimal state for learning. Shoshin is why I still consider myself an amateur in a lot of ways and constantly seek out more sources for knowledge.
